Meeting Minutes

On February 11, 2017 West Tennessee Woodturners held a regular monthly meeting at Jackson State Community College, with Bill Wyche presiding.  Members present were Billy Joe Hill, Jack Couch, Rob Roy, Giley Wright, Bill Smith, Kirk Smith, Amanda Driver, Jerry Dawson, Paul Reed, Ross Lipscomb, Cecil Cravens, Chuck Jones, Kenny Adcock, Robert Reeves, Ken Stumpenhorst, Danny Clark, Randy Pitts, and our newest member Tracy Pierce.  Visitors were Mick Douglas, Randy McAuley, Jimmy Bevis, and Barney Cruise.

  • Bill announced that there would be our regular wood exchange after the meeting.  He asked that everyone keep in mind that this is our primary method of raising funds for the club.  There was also a special drawing for a very nice Acacia bowl blank that had been donated by club member Adron Joyner.  Giley Wright was the lucky winner.

  • He also noted that Mark Sillay will conduct three days of hands-on classes April 5, 6, and 7.  All three days are fully booked with six participants for each day.  The classes will be held from 9:00am until 5:00 pm each day and will be at Chuck Jones' workshop. Students should be prepared to pay the $50 per day fee on the day they come to class. The club will collect the money, then write one check on the club account to pay Mark.

The class projects will require mostly 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" x 6" and 8" x 8" x 3"-4" wood blanks.  Mark will be bring wood, probably lumber yard pine, for the projects.  If class members wish to bring their own wood please feel free to do so.

Class attendees will also need to bring their own safety gear, such as eye protection and dust masks, and their own tools.

  • Bill raised the issue of the starting time for our regular club meetings by asking the members for their opinion on starting the meetings at 9:00 instead of 9:30.  After considerable discussion it was decided to leave the starting time as is out of consideration for those who must travel longer distance to attend the meeting.

  • Bill  opened a discussion on whether the club wished to support a local charitable organization as we did last year.  There was considerable discussion and everyone seemed to be pleased with the way things went last year with the booth at the Jackson International Food and Arts Festival.  It was decided that we will again participate in that festival in October with proceeds going to LeBonheur Childrens Hospital,  Club members will be asked to donate items they have made to be sold at the clubs booth at this festival.  The revenue from the sale of these items will be donated to LeBonheur.  Any items that do not sell will be given to LeBonheur for their internal fundraising activities.

The business meeting was adjourned and the floor was turned over to Kirk Smith for his presentation on casting.

The winner of the gallery contest was Jack Couch's walnut cake stand.  For some reason we did not get the usual photo of the formal presentation so we had to look back through the older photo for a picture of Jack.  Not sure what he is doing in this photo, but it looks like he was just wandering around looking at things.  Both of Jack's cake stands are outstanding, as we've come to expect from him.  You can see both of them in the photos below.
